The 2026 Johor State Election was the 16th state election in Johor since independence. Before polling day, Barisan Nasional held a two-thirds majority after winning 40 of 56 seats in the 2022 state election. Pakatan Harapan held 12 seats and Perikatan Nasional held three, with MUDA holding Puteri Wangsa. The 2026 contest followed BN’s decision to contest independently at state level while remaining in the federal unity government. Analysts expected BN to perform strongly in Johor, historically an UMNO stronghold.
Key issues in the 2026 Johor State Election included the pace of state development, cost of living, and the relationship between state-level BN campaigning and the PH-led federal government. Campaign messaging also focused on stability under BN versus PH’s appeal to younger and non-Malay voters. Perikatan Nasional sought to defend Malay-majority seats after PAS ended its cooperation with Bersatu nationally, while local PN arrangements still shaped several contests. Turnout rose compared with 2022, reflecting higher mobilisation across both government and opposition strongholds.
