Employers must give their workers a reasonable period of time to exercise their rights as voters in the general election on May 5th.
Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department director-general Mohd Jeffrey Joakim said the workers' right to vote was stipulated in Section 25 (1) of the Election Offences Act 1954.
In a statement today, he suggested employers give reasonable time-off for workers whose polling areas were located near their respective offices.
Employees should also be allowed to apply for annual leave, especially those who have to return to their respective states to vote.
Mohd Jeffrey said legal action could be taken against employers who refuse to allow their workers to exercise their voting rights, adding that they could face imprisonment for a year or fined five thousand ringgit, if found guilty.
